From Fugang Harbour, near Taitung, we took the ferry across to Green Island, a small volcanic island off the east coast. The crossing to Nanliao Harbour on the island takes 50 minutes to an hour. Once we’d arrived we checked into the quirky Tube 18 Resort.
After the busy mainland it was lovely and peaceful, and a good start to our time on the island. Green Island has a saltwater hot spring at Zhaori, heated by volcanic rock, which Taiwan’s tourist board calls one of only three of its kind in the world. The island’s former political prison is also here, now the White Terror Memorial Park and part of Taiwan’s National Human Rights Museum.
