Our trips in Europe
We've written up three European trips so far: Ibiza (twice), Switzerland and Iceland. They couldn't be much more different. Ibiza was pool days, sunsets and a solar eclipse; Switzerland was mountain trains and hiking; Iceland was four days in a campervan in February, chasing daylight along the south coast.
Two trips, both from San Antonio
Our first trip, in 2019, was 12 days at Hotel Puchet in San Antonio: pool days, the Ibiza Rocks parties, sunset at Café del Mar, a day trip to Formentera and a tour round the island. We went back in August 2026 for the total solar eclipse and watched it from Cala Tarida. Low cloud hid totality, but we saw the partial phases and a crescent sun setting into the sea. We didn't hire a car either time. The buses got us to Ibiza Town, Cala Bassa and Cala Tarida without much trouble.
Zurich and the Bernese Oberland
In 2025 we spent a couple of days in Zurich, then joined a group tour based in the car-free village of Wengen. From there we walked the Royal Walk at Männlichen, hiked from Grindelwald First to Lake Bachalpsee and from Grütschalp to Mürren, took the boat across Lake Brienz to Giessbach Falls, and rode the train up to Jungfraujoch. In Zurich we also fitted in the Lindt chocolate factory and sunset from the Polyterrasse.

Four days on the south coast
In February 2020 we picked up a Campeasy campervan at Keflavík and drove the south coast. We saw sunrise under Vestrahorn at Stokksnes, icebergs at Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach, walked into an ice cave, and stopped at Fjaðrárgljúfur, Reynisfjara, Skógafoss, Seljalandsfoss, Strokkur and Gullfoss before a storm chased us into Reykjavík. Four days in winter is tight, so plan for long drives and have a back-up if the weather turns.

Visit Iceland (official tourist board)
If you're choosing between them: Ibiza is the easiest to do without a car and suits a week of sun. Switzerland suits you if you like walking, with trains and cable cars doing most of the climbing. Iceland in winter needs your own vehicle, good insurance and flexible plans, because the weather decides your route.
