Day 19: Sunset on Koh Phi Phi

A second day on Koh Phi Phi during our 2022 Thailand trip, ending with the sun setting over the island before heading back to Ao Nang.

We had a second day on Koh Phi Phi. Phi Phi Don, where we were staying, is two long limestone ridges joined by a low, narrow strip of land, with Ton Sai village in the middle. It’s the largest island in the group and the only one where people live. There are no cars, so getting around is done on foot or by boat.

Its smaller neighbour, Phi Phi Leh, is home to Maya Bay, which we’d visited on the boat trip the day before and which was made famous by the film The Beach in 2000. Our second day finished the best way possible, watching the sun go down over the island.

Good to know

  • Arriving on Phi Phi: there’s a 20-baht fee when you land at Tonsai Pier. There are no cars on the island, so everywhere is on foot or by boat.

We checked these details in October 2026. Times, prices and rules do change, so it’s worth a quick look at the official sites before you go.

See it on film

Most of our trips have a film on YouTube, from puffins on Skomer to the Drake Passage.
