Wednesday was the day we'd been looking forward to for months. We kept the morning easy by the hotel pool, then caught the 1pm bus back out to Cala Tarida and the spot we'd picked out the day before. Lunch was at 17, a lovely Italian restaurant right on the water, and afterwards we wandered down to the old fisherman's huts in the cove for a swim. The sea was glorious, and with boats bobbing offshore playing music, the whole cove had a brilliant, laid-back feel.
By 7pm we were in position with our eclipse glasses ready, and we watched the partial phases as the moon slowly covered more and more of the sun. By then the sun was very low, and at the crucial moment cloud and haze sitting on the horizon hid it, so we didn't see totality. After months of looking forward to it, that was a real disappointment. The light still went strange and dim all around us, which was eerie, and later we watched a thin crescent sun setting into the sea.
The evening had one more setback. Our pre-booked taxi cancelled on us, and with half of Ibiza trying to get a lift at the same time, it took the best part of three hours to sort out a replacement. We made the most of the wait back at 17 with dinner and more sangria until our ride turned up.
