Day 4: Markets and Culture

An early start for the Maeklong Railway Market, where stalls fold back for passing trains, then the boats of Damnoen Saduak Floating Market.

It was an early start to reach the Maeklong Railway Market, which sits about 80km south-west of Bangkok. The market is built right along the railway line, and when a train is due the stallholders pull back their stalls and awnings so it can squeeze through, then set everything out again once it has passed.

From there we went on to the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, about 100km south-west of Bangkok. It’s a maze of boats piled high with fresh produce and local crafts, moving slowly along the narrow waterways.

Good to know

  • Maeklong: the market is about 80km south-west of Bangkok. Four trains a day pass through in each direction. Check the current times locally, as the timetable does change.
  • Damnoen Saduak: the floating market is about 100km south-west of Bangkok and is busiest between 7am and 9am, so go early. It winds down by lunchtime. Tourism Authority of Thailand
