We saw Bangkok from the saddle today. The cycling tour took us down narrow backstreets and tiny alleyways and along the old canals, well away from the main roads.
Bangkok was once built around its waterways, which earned it the name “Venice of the East”. Most of the smaller canals were filled in for roads as the city grew. Every so often we’d stop at one of the local wats (temples). Their calm, detailed decoration was a real contrast to the noise of the city around them.
Good to know
- Visiting temples: cover your shoulders and knees, and take your shoes off before going into the buildings.
We checked these details in October 2026. Times, prices and rules do change, so it’s worth a quick look at the official sites before you go.
