Day 20: Back to the Ancient City

Our second visit to the Ancient City (Muang Boran) outside Bangkok, revisiting favourite buildings and walking the peaceful grounds again.

We went back to the Ancient City (Muang Boran) outside Bangkok, our second visit of the trip, to see our favourite buildings again.

It was created by Lek Viriyaphant, the same man behind the Erawan Museum, and its own website calls it the world’s largest private museum. The grounds cover 316 acres and are laid out in the shape of Thailand, with more than a hundred buildings placed roughly where the originals stand. Among them are copies of palaces from Ayutthaya and Bangkok. It was good to enjoy the peaceful grounds one more time.

Good to know

  • Ancient City (Muang Boran): open daily from 9am to 7pm, last tickets at 6pm. Foreign adults pay 800 baht. The grounds cover 316 acres, so allow most of a day. Ancient City

We checked these details in October 2026. Times, prices and rules do change, so it’s worth a quick look at the official sites before you go.

See it on film

Most of our trips have a film on YouTube, from puffins on Skomer to the Drake Passage.
