Our Antarctica trip began in Buenos Aires. We landed on 9 November, checked into La Fresque Hotel and went out to explore the area around it, walking down to Plaza de Mayo to see the Casa Rosada, the pink presidential palace.

It was a short stop. Early the next morning we were on the 6.20am flight south to Ushuaia, where we’d spend a few days before boarding the ship.
Buenos Aires sits on the west bank of the Río de la Plata and is Argentina’s capital and largest city. The Casa Rosada is where the president works, and the statue on horseback in front of it is of Manuel Belgrano, who created the Argentine flag. Ushuaia, at the other end of the country, is around 2,400 km to the south.
