We caught the 9am bus from San Antonio bus station to Ibiza Town (€6 each for a return), a journey of about 45 minutes. The ferry is a five-minute walk from there, and we boarded an air-conditioned Trasmapi ferry for the half-hour crossing to La Savina on Formentera.
Arriving felt like stepping off in the Caribbean, with clear turquoise water and white sand along the shore. We hired bikes and cycled to Platja de Ses Illetes, which lies inside the Ses Salines Natural Park, then went snorkelling and had a bite to eat.
Later we headed back to Ibiza Town to explore the old town. Dalt Vila, the walled old town, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, and the main way in is through the Portal de ses Taules gate. Above the whitewashed buildings stands the bell tower of the Catedral de Santa Maria de las Nieves.
