A scenic train ride took us up into the Alps to Wengen, a car-free village above the Lauterbrunnen Valley. We dropped our luggage at the Braunbär Hotel & Spa and went straight up by cable car to Männlichen for the Royal Walk, which runs from the top station out to the crown viewpoint.
From the top, the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau were lined up in front of us, and it was wonderfully quiet. We hiked down to the midway station before heading back to Wengen.
A session in the hotel spa did our legs some good, and we finished with a hearty dinner at The Deck as the mountains turned to dark outlines around us.
Good to know
- Wengen: the village is car-free. You leave the car at Lauterbrunnen and take the train up. From Interlaken Ost it’s 37 minutes. Jungfrau Region
- Männlichen: the cable car from Wengen takes five minutes. The Royal Walk from the top station to the crown viewpoint takes about 30 minutes. The 2026 summer season ran from 23 May to 25 October. Männlichen
- Panorama Trail: from Männlichen you can walk on to Kleine Scheidegg, 4.5km and about 1 hour 20 minutes, mostly downhill. It opens from mid-June. Männlichen
