Mirror Reflections at Lake Bachalpsee

A hike from Grindelwald First through wildflower meadows to Lake Bachalpsee, photographing the peaks reflected in the lake, then back down to Grindelwald.

This walk is one of the best known in the region. We took the gondola from Grindelwald up to First, where the First Cliff Walk runs round the edge of the cliff, and followed the path through meadows full of wildflowers to Lake Bachalpsee. The lake sits at 2,265m, and the water was beautifully clear, with snow and ice still lying across parts of it.

We stopped for a good while to photograph the peaks reflected in the still surface of the lake, with the rugged mountains all around. The walk back down to Grindelwald was slow and easy, which gave us time to take in the views properly.

Good to know

  • First: the gondola from Grindelwald takes 25 minutes. At the top, the First Cliff Walk is a 45m walkway round the edge of the cliff. Jungfrau Railways
  • Bachalpsee: the lake is at 2,265m. The walk from First takes less than an hour each way.

We checked these details in October 2026. Times, prices and rules do change, so it’s worth a quick look at the official sites before you go.
