We left the mountains and took the train back to Zurich, watching the scenery change out of the window. Once we were settled back at Hotel Montana, we went for one last traditional meal at Rheinfelder Bierhalle, where we’d eaten on our first night.
As evening came on, we rode the historic Polybahn up to the Polyterrasse and watched the sun go down over Zurich, with the spires and rooftops turning gold below us. The little funicular opened in 1889 and climbs from Central up to the ETH terrace in under two minutes. It was a lovely way to spend our last evening in Switzerland.
Good to know
- Polybahn: the funicular opened in 1889 and takes under two minutes from Central to the ETH terrace. A single is CHF 1.20, and city tickets are valid. It runs until 9pm. Polybahn
- Sunset tip: the last car up is at 9pm, so in midsummer you may need to walk up for the sunset itself.
